From when on is screening useful?

Self-examination

Every woman should feel her breasts once a month and also look for possible changes.
More on self-examination.

Regular mammography

The health insurance, provides within its prevention programme, each year a free breast screening for women from the age of 30 onwards. The gynaecologist examines the breasts and the armpits, pressing gently on the skin to detect abnormal changes..

Regular mammography

Mammography is currently the best method for early detection of breast cancer. With the help of mammography we can recognise even the smallest changes in tissue structure long before a lump or a node is felt in the chest. Breast cancer which is detected and diagnosed early can be gently treated, and in most cases cured.

Mammography - from when on?

Most often breast cancers occur newly in the post-menopausal years, i.e. at the age of 50 to 69 years. Since 30 percent of new cases of breast cancer occur in patients already between the ages of 40 and 50 years, many women even above the age of 40 years wish a mammography. Additional examinations

With increased risk for breast cancer, for example, if there are close relatives suffering from breast cancer, additional examinations/screenings may be needed for early diagnosis. Your gynaecologist can arrange this. Depending on the risk, for example, shorter intervals between examinations and an earlier start to screening tests may be useful. A complementary ultrasound examination or magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) is carried out in certain cases.
